PRISTINA – Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (SRSG) Joachim Rücker visited Obiliq/Obilić municipality and praised efforts by the local authorities to improve relations between all communities.
After meeting Municipal Assembly President Ismet Hashani and other municipal leaders, the SRSG addressed the media, and stressed the importance of working to make improvements in people’s daily lives, particularly in Standards implementation.
The SRSG noted that Obiliq/Obilić municipality is “an excellent example of a multicultural Kosovo, an example of how you can live and work together and achieve results.”
“We discussed standards implementation, in particular the returns here in Obiliq/Obilić,” the SRSG said. “We also discussed the environment and the relationship between the municipality and KEK,” the Kosovo electric company, whose main power plants are in Obiliq/Obilić.
The SRSG said that the resolution of Kosovo’s status will provide a political, economic and social perspective for everyone in Kosovo. “As we head into the final stretch of the status process, we should understand what is expected of everyone,” he said.
At the Plemetinë/Plemetina Camp, Mr. Rücker listened to concerns of the camp residents and promised UNMIK’s continued support for the camp’s closure this spring. He praised work done to date by the municipality in building social housing to relocate former residents of the camp to permanent homes.
The SRSG then visited the village of Babimoc/Babin Most, where a Kosovo Police Service officer was recently killed while riding in a car near the village. Mr. Rücker regretted the politicisation of the killing in subsequent public statements by some officials. He also discussed the concerns of Kosovo Serb residents of the village, who have complained about police searches conducted during the investigation into the killing of the officer, and promised that their complaints will be addressed by a police special inquiry.
