Pristina -- SRSG Michael Steiner today welcomed Ambassador Carlo Civiletti, who will head the Council of Europe’s Decentralization Mission in Kosovo.
The SRSG and Ambassador Cviletti discussed the mandate of the nine-month long Council of Europe mission, the goal of which will be to assist UNMIK and the Provisional Institutions in designing a framework for local government reform.
“The aim of decentralization is to bring government closer to the people and to improve the effectiveness of government in delivering services,” said SRSG Michael Steiner.
The SRSG stressed that decentralisation is in line with modern European practices and that the process of reforming Kosovo’s local government will also help establish European standards in Kosovo.
