PRISTINA – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (SRSG) Søren Jessen-Petersen today issued the statement below following the election of the new government by the Kosovo Assembly:
“I welcome the election of Mr. Agim Ceku as Prime Minister and of the new government by the Kosovo Assembly today. It is also very significant that the Ministers of Interior and of Justice are part of the new Cabinet. They have an extremely important responsibility in establishing the new ministries on a firm professional footing and as agencies that serve the interests of all communities of Kosovo.
I congratulate the Kosovo Assembly and all political parties for once again upholding democratic values in challenging circumstances. Every such occasion, and there have been so many in the past year, contributes to building a strong democratic tradition that will hold Kosovo in good stead in its journey to Europe.
I also welcome Prime Minister Ceku’s pledge to hard work and readiness to address any future shortcomings in the performance of the Government.
As Commander of the Kosovo Protection Corps, Mr. Ceku has proved to be a good working partner for UNMIK, for me personally, and for the international community as a whole. His commitment to standards implementation, particularly with respect to increasing minority representation in the Kosovo Protection Corps, has been widely acknowledged including in the UN Security Council. I am confident that this same commitment, combined with his leadership and management skills so amply evident in his previous role, will now translate into concrete government initiatives to address the many priorities during this crucial period for Kosovo, including the very important minority issues.
I look forward to working closely with Prime Minister Agim Ceku and members of the new Government.”
