PRISTINA – SRSG Søren Jessen-Petersen issued the following statement upon being formally informed by the LDK Presidency of their nomination of Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu as candidate for the President of Kosovo:
"I have just been informed formally by Mr. Kole Berisha and Dr. Naim Jerliu that the Presidency of the LDK has unanimously nominated Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu as candidate for the President of Kosovo.
Kosovo recently suffered a profound loss with the passing of President Rugova. In spite of the sadness we all feel, it is important that the political process goes on in order to carry forward the vision of President Rugova. I therefore welcome this nomination by the Presidency of the LDK and look forward to the Assembly of Kosovo moving promptly to the election of a new President of Kosovo.
The institutions of Kosovo can continue to rely on UNMIK for support during the crucial months ahead."
