UNMIK/PR/1097
PRISTINA – UNMIK is very concerned about allegations in the press about discrimination against Serbs by UNMIK Customs in Kosovo.
Regarding the case mentioned in the press, UNMIK Customs did receive a request for exemption from charges on fuel and other items. On the basis of the information provided to the Customs Service, there was no legal basis for allowing an exemption of charges in this case. The Customs Service informed the applicant on the conditions under which an exemption of charges could be obtained.
When the shipment of fuel was presented on entry to Kosovo, UNMIK Customs Officers advised that the necessary charges needed to be paid initially, but that, according to the existing legislation, these charges could be reclaimed.
The request for payment by Customs Officers was therefore entirely consistent with the law and represents in no way a discriminatory act by the Service.
The Customs Service is always available to clarify the legal basis for the calculation of charges and the basis on which exemptions may be claimed.
