UNMIK Police announced today the arrests of a number of individuals on suspicion of involvement in a brutal attack on a Kosovo Albanian family in Glogovac last year.
“The attack on the family Hajra resulted in the deaths of Mr. Hajra, his wife and three of his four children,” said Officer Paul Hamlin in a press briefing at UNMIK HQ. Hamlin is the UNMIK Police Pristina Region Commander
He said the arrests were carried out this morning by UNMIK Police in Pristina and Glogovac and that all those arrested are now in detention and will be processed through the judicial system. He said follow-on searches were continuing in a number of locations.
“This morning’s arrests resulted from investigations ongoing since the attack on 20 August 2001,” he said. “We believe we have found those responsible.
To a question on the number and identities of those arrested, Commander Hamlin said that police had arrested eight men, three of whom were members of the Kosovo Protection Corps. “But I wish to note that these arrests were not targeted at the KPC, but at individuals suspected of involvement in a ruthless and brutal attack on a family. Their background played no part in the arrests.”
Asked about reports that people were mistreated during the arrests, Commander Hamlin responded that he had no information that anyone had been mistreated, but that one woman in a house which police entered had fainted. Medics treated her immediately, he said.
