PRISTINA – At approximately 05:30am, UNMIK Police and KFOR started an operation to restore law and order in northern Mitrovica by re-establishing control of the UNMIK Court house that was forcibly occupied by a mob on Friday, 14 March.
Initial reports from the scene indicate that some UNMIK police officers and KFOR soldiers have been injured in the operation. In addition, some KFOR and UN vehicles have been burned. The Joint UNMIK-KFOR operation is ongoing. Dozens of people have been arrested.
Principal Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo (PDSRSG) Larry Rossin took this opportunity to remind all Kosovo communities to exercise calm so that UNMIK can continue to efficiently fulfil its mandate throughout the territory of Kosovo.
“I specifically urge those who are reacting in a violent manner to the action taken by UNMIK and KFOR to respect law and order and to cease their illegal activities,” said the PDSRSG.
