Willian Nash meets Albanian and Serb Leaders

UNMIK/PR/224

MITROVICA: Mitrovica Regional Administrator William Nash held his first official joint meeting today with two of the regions leading political figures, Albanian Dr. Bajram Rexhepi, President of the local branch of the Kosovo Democratic Progress Party (PPDK) and Mr. Oliver Ivanovic, President of the Executive Board of the Serb National Council.

Talks were straightforward, friendly and comprehensive; the discussions covered a wide range of subjects affecting Mitrovica. These included: the importance of stability in the region, the safe return of displaced persons to their homes, the creation of job opportunities and the development of economy in all areas. Additionally, all participants pledged their commitment to a peaceful resolution of the issues confronting the region.

“I am pleased with the start we have made in establishing the agenda and atmosphere for our future endeavors,” Mr. Nash said.

"There is no doubt, however, that much patience, persistence and hard work lie ahead for all concerned.” At the meeting, he stressed the importance of this work and “the need for responsible leadership from all the people of Mitrovica.” A meeting of the Regional Advisory Board will be held on 2 May 2000.
