What’s UNV’s role in Kosovo?

In Kosovo UN volunteers responsibilities range from writing press releases, giving political briefings, providing legal assistance, to fixing computers and treating wounds.  Each and every day 26 UN volunteers assist UNMIK in implementing its mandate throughout the municipalities of Kosovo.

UNV began its involvement in Kosovo in 1999 with the implementation of the peacekeeping mission following more than a decade of civil conflict and months of air strikes. Over the years thousands of UN volunteers have given their time, skills and energy to help Kosovars rebuild their lives.

At the height of the mission 700 UN volunteers were serving at any given time. They worked in more than 20 different departments and units of UNMIK.  Now as the mission downsizes, fewer UN Volunteers serve, but their presence is as vital today as it was 12 years ago.

What’s UNV’s role in Kosovo?

We don’t just talk the talk but we walk the walk. UN volunteers go beyond their official UNMIK duties to help Kosovars. We organize clothing drives, run awareness-raising campaigns on the environment, the MDGs, etc., hold fundraising events, and partner with local NGOs.

Each December we also celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD) with a range of activities in close partnership with UNDP and local volunteer groups. All staff members are invited to join these activities.
