About UNMIK Office of the Rule of Law

The UNMIK Office of the Rule of Law (OROL) through its Justice and Correction Section (JCS) and the Office of Senior Police Advisor (SPOLAD) contributes to the strengthening of rule of law and related institutions in Kosovo.

Through the implementation of programmatic activities, the office also supports the promotion of rule of law and enhancement of security institutions in Kosovo in accordance with international and regional standards. This support continued during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This includes facilitating international police and judicial cooperation by liaising with INTERPOL, for example upon request by the Kosovo authorities UNMIK processes the issuance of International Wanted Notices (Red Notices). UNMIK’s engagement with INTERPOL is based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2002, which remains in force.

UNMIK also provides certification services on private documents for use by non-recognising UN Member States, including academic and/or civil status (birth, marriage, death, etc.) and pensions to be used in UN member states that do not recognize Kosovo. This service enables individuals to work and/or study in non-recognizing UN member states or request their pensions from Serbian authorities. From January 2013 to date, UNMIK has certified over 20,000 documents.  If you need a document certified please get in touch through our contact form.

UNMIK also works with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to implement UNODC’s strategic priorities in the areas of law enforcement, enhanced border security, strengthening the fight against organized crime, countering illicit financial flows, and drug use prevention and treatment of drug use disorders.
