Advancing Inclusion for All: Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities
UNMIK joins the global community in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed under this year’s theme: “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress”.
This theme underscores the urgent need to build societies where persons with disabilities can participate fully, equally, and independently in all aspects of life. It also highlights the importance of inclusive policies, unfettered access to services, and the removal of physical and social barriers.
“Creating an inclusive society not only advances the rights of all, but serves as a foundation for real and sustainable progress,” said the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and OiC UNMIK Milbert Dongjoon Shin. “When people of all abilities can contribute without limitations, communities thrive.”
In Kosovo, people with disabilities have the potential to drive change. Whether it is advocating for accessible schools, inclusive workplaces, improved emergency-response systems, or expanded essential services, their determination is helping build a more just, equal, and inclusive society.
Their innovation and resilience do more than inspire - they propel progress. Yet, too many still face discrimination, inaccessible environments, and unequal access to services that should be guaranteed to all.
UNMIK reiterates its call for persons with disabilities to be fully included as equal partners in shaping the decisions that affect their lives, as fundamental rights and justice.
The Mission reaffirms its commitment to working alongside organizations led by persons with disabilities, government institutions, and civil society to uphold the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; to advocate for stronger laws, more inclusive policies, and accessible spaces; and to promote a society where everyone can participate freely, safely, and meaningfully in public life.
