"Inside Out" Kosovo Campaign

"I wish for you to stand up for what you care about by participating in a global art project, and together we'll turn the world...INSIDE OUT." – JR

The young people of Kosovo are eager to enter the spotlight, make themselves heard, and effect positive changes in their communities.
To help raise awareness of these efforts, UNMIK, UNICEF, and several Kosovo-based youth organizations support the “Inside Out” campaign.

“Inside Out is a large-scale, interactive art project designed to showcase personal statements of identity into works of public art. Conceptualized by street artist and 2011 TED Prize winner JR, the campaign invites youth from all ethnic groups across the country to share their stories, images, and views with both their communities and the world. Combining black-and-white photographic portraits with statements about who they are and what they stand for, the project encourages Kosovars to turn their public spaces into impromptu public galleries.

These exhibitions will be documented, archived and viewable online.

Since June 2012, UNICEF, UNMIK and many other local and international organizations have been helping young people in Kosovo to participate in “Inside Out,” and to share their experiences.

The response was tremendous, with large numbers of youths sharing their voices, their faces, and their beliefs in the cause of eliminating stereotypes, encouraging dialogue, and establishing themselves as agents of change.

In support of this campaign, UNMIK has turned the walls of its headquarters into a public gallery, showcasing the voices and views of Kosovo’s youth to staff, visitors, and passers-by.

Young people make up the majority of Kosovo’s population, and through participating in “Inside Out,” the once-invisible majority now can make themselves known to the world.
