Modernizing Courts for Enabling Equal Access to Justice

UNMIK, UNDP, and the Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC) teams recently inaugurated a newly modernized court archive at the Basic Court of Gjakova/Đakovica, marking a step in Kosovo's judicial reform. The launch event gathered various officials and stakeholders actively involved in advancing rule of law in Kosovo.

The modernization of the Court's archive is part of a wider initiative aimed at improving general operations, case management, and accessibility within judiciary. The project also includes the digitalization of case records across seven basic courts in Kosovo's, ensuring better access to legal documents and preservation of case files. Furthermore, the initiative includes the engagement of 16 young legal officers, providing them with practical experience in preparation for potential careers in Kosovo's judiciary.

Antero Lopes, Director of the Rule of Law Office at UNMIK, highlighted the initiative's focus on facility upgrades, technology improvements, legal assistance, and reducing case backlogs, while also promoting inclusivity, including support for visually impaired legal assistants.

Nuno Queiros, UNDP Kosovo's Resident Representative, also emphasized that these efforts contribute to building trust and social cohesion.

Albert Zogaj, Chair of the Kosovo Judicial Council, expressed gratitude for the UN's support in strengthening trust in judiciary and ensuring equal treatment for all communities in Kosovo.

Additionally, 16 young legal officers have been engaged to gain hands-on experience, preparing them for potential long-term careers in Kosovo’s judiciary.

UNMIK, along with all UN AFPs in Kosovo, remains committed to supporting these efforts, ensuring that the modernization of court infrastructure and legal accessibility extends to key judicial institutions.

This modernization effort is part of Kosovo's broader judicial reforms aimed at creating a more transparent, accessible, and equitable legal system.
