World Humanitarian Day is an opportunity to recognize those who face danger and adversity in the course of helping others.

On August 19th, 2003, the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, was bombed, killing 22 people. Each year on this date, we commemorate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and pay homage to those who continue to help people around the world, regardless of who or where they are.

The 2012 global campaign, titled “I Was Here,” is about making your mark by doing something good, somewhere in the world. The aim of the campaign is to make social media history by inspiring one billion people to log onto the site and pledge a good deed this August 19th.
The campaign is already generating buzz with both high-profile celebrities and the public at large.

On August 10, American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress Beyoncé Knowles performed her new song “I Was Here” to more than 1,200 fans, celebrities, humanitarian workers, and dignitaries at the United Nations General Assembly In New York. The video for the song, donated to the campaign by Ms. Knowles and songwriter Diane Warren, will premiere on August 19th.

On August 19, 2012, the humanitarian community will be calling on their global networks to ensure the world takes notice of World Humanitarian Day.
