ASG Jenča begins visit to Kosovo, meets with Kosovo leadership and visits religious sites

Mr. Miroslav Jenča, the Assistant Secretary-General in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations began his visit to Kosovo on 29 August, meeting with Kosovo leadership and visiting religious heritage sites.

ASG Jenča and SRSG Tanin met the President of Kosovo, Ms. Vjosa Osmani on Monday. They discussed a wide range of issues such as the need for furthering the dialogue and inter-community trust-building as well as the challenges faced by Kosovo due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ASG Jenča underscored the UN’s support for the communities in Kosovo in overcoming the pandemic and strengthening inter-community trust, rule of law and ensuring the enhanced participation of women in social and political life.

ASG Jenča and SRSG Tanin later met the President of the Assembly of Kosovo, Mr. Glauk Konjufca. They spoke about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Kosovo and the assistance provided by the United Nations during this period. They also touched upon the political situation, including the dialogue and regional cooperation matters. The continuing work of UNMIK and the United Nations to support trust-building in Kosovo was also discussed at the meeting. ASG Jenča also had a meeting with the Minister for Communities and Returns, Mr. Goran Rakić.

ASG Jenča also visited the Visoki Dečani Monastery and the Xhamia e Madhe (Grand Mosque) in Pristina where he discussed the protection and preservation of places of worship and the importance of tolerance, inter-faith and inter-community dialogue and trust-building.

He also met civil society representatives to exchange views on the participation of youth and women in political life, and their role in building trust and an inclusive society, based on respecting human rights for all.

Later, ASG Jenča met with the leadership and staff of UNMIK and the UN Kosovo Team to express his appreciation for their dedication and important work in supporting Kosovo’s communities, which was followed by meetings with the heads of international presences and members of the diplomatic community in Kosovo.
