SRSG Ziadeh welcomes next step to inclusion of international disability rights treaty in Kosovo law

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMIK Caroline Ziadeh warmly welcomes today’s decision by the Constitutional Court of Kosovo that states the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is compatible with Kosovo’s constitution – paving the way for inclusion of internationally-recognised human rights standards on the rights of persons with disabilities within the Kosovo legal framework.

“This represents years of advocacy and hard work by many disability rights advocates, led by HandiKos, civil society, politicians and the Office for Good Governance. We hope the Assembly approval required to make these legislative changes comes quickly  – ultimately enabling all persons with disabilities in Kosovo to have their fundamental human rights further protected by Kosovo law,” SRSG Ziadeh said.

UNMIK has been supporting HandiKos and partners in advocacy efforts to reach this milestone and remains committed to helping Kosovo’s persons with disabilities achieve full equality and strengthen their inclusion in society.
