UNMIK works to support Kosovo Police and other local partners

16 December 2014 - PRISTINA, The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) in Kosovo, Jennifer Brush, today praised representatives of the Kosovo Police (KP), stating: “You are working to enhance public order and to prevent and fight crime. All of us who live and work in Kosovo can see the results of your untiring efforts.”

The KP officials were at the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) Headquarters to accept vehicle donations. UNMIK donated a total of seven vehicles. Four were for the KP stations in North Mitrovica, Leposaviq/Leposavić, Zveçan/Zvečan, and Zubin Potok, which form part of the newly created Mitrovica North Regional Directorate. DSRSG Brush said, “With our donation to the northern Kosovo Police stations, we want to support the positive changes that are now taking place in the region following the Brussels agreements.”

UNMIK donated the remaining three vehicles to three stations in the Pejë/Peć Region – namely Pejë/Peć, Klinë/Klina and Istog/Istok. DSRSG Brush stated that the Pejë/Peć Region had been chosen because “UNMIK wants to strengthen capacity, to bolster police activities to protect Kosovo’s ethnic minority communities.”

Lauding the fact that crime and road traffic accidents have decreased from October to November 2014, DSRSG Brush added, “The United Nations is doing what it can to help boost security in the region. UNMIK created and nurtured the local police. And we will continue to support you as you carry out your important work.”

Dejan Jankovic, the Kosovo Police Deputy General Director, expressed his appreciation. He stated: “Your donation will help us especially in accomplishing our strategic aim to provide better service to all communities by implementing Community-Oriented Policing.”

Today’s event launched a series of donations that will last until 24 December 2014. UNMIK intends to donate vehicles and medical equipment to a wide range of local partners, including Kosovo institutions and civil society groups.
