STATEMENT BY THE UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR LEGAL AFFAIRS AND UNITED NATIONS LEGAL COUNSEL, Mr. MIGUEL DE SERPA SOARES, TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL

The Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas Mr. Miroslav Jenča heard concerns and success stories from leaders of women civil society organizations across Kosovo communities during a two-day visit to Kosovo.
UNMIK is following with great concern the developments in northern Kosovo today, including the detention of two UN staff members during the course of their duties by Kosovo Police.
The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, Mr. Miroslav Jenča, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Kosovo, Mr. Zahir Tanin, held separate meetings with Assembly Speaker Kadri Veseli and parliamentary caucus leaders.
Young people are more than just a resource base to help put up posters during election time – and should be taken seriously by Kosovo’s politicians.
Fighting for justice just got easier for Kosovo communities, with the opening of a new centre that will provide free legal services to those most in need – including women and minority groups.
Creating more opportunities for young people and enabling them to be actors for peace and progress were key messages shared with a room full of Kosovo youth during the third annual United Nations Kosovo Youth Assembly.
