UNMIK Chief met with Chief Prosecutor David Schwendiman

Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Zahir Tanin met today with Chief Prosecutor David Schwendiman, who leads the newly created Specialist Prosecutor’s Office.  The Specialist Prosecutor’s Office is authorised to continue investigations of, and to prosecute crimes committed in relation to, conduct identified in the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Report Doc 12462 of 7 January 2011 (“the Marty Report”).

Mr. Tanin expressed appreciation for Mr. Schwendiman’s commitment and emphasis on the full independence of the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office, which separates it from the Specialist Chambers and from all other prosecutors in Kosovo.  Mr. Schwendiman praised Mr. Tanin and other UN officials for outstanding professional and responsive institutional cooperation.

Both agreed  upon the importance for Kosovo’s future that the Specialist Chambers achieves legitimate outcomes that are also perceived as legitimate by those affected, in Kosovo, the region and internationally.
